Post-Op Exercises

The following post-operation exercises are to be followed as directed by Dr. John Nassar. Please touch base with our office to make sure you are following the post-operation exercise schedule that is right for you.

Ankle Circles

Draw circles with your foot.  Rotate clockwise 10 times, then counterclockwise 10 times.  This exercise can be done when you are no longer in a hard cast.  If you are in a removable boot, then perform this exercise several times a day with the boot off.  If you are in a shoe, start this exercise immediately after surgery.


Initially, you are only allowed to touch your foot down and rest it on the ground for balance.  It is preferable to put the weight on your heel, unless otherwise instructed.  Crutches, walker and/or a wheelchair will be provided for your assistance.  Thereafter, Dr. Nassar will tell you when you will be allowed to begin weight bearing on your foot.

Toe Raises, Toe Curls

Flex and extend your foot and toes.  Hold each position for 5 seconds.  Repeat 10 times every hour.  This should be done even when in a cast or boot.

Ankle Pumps

Move your foot up and down rhythmically by contracting the calf and shin muscles.  Perform this exercise periodically for two to three minutes, two or times an hour.  This should be done as best as possible even when in a cast or boot.

Pain or Swelling After Exercise or Activity

You may experience mild foot pain or swelling after exercise or activity.  Elevate your foot and apply ice wrapped in a towel.  Exercise and activity should consistently improve your strength and mobility.  If you have any questions, contact Dr. Nassar’s office.
